You pick your printer, click Set as default, and Windows quietly changes it back. Or the Set as default button is nowhere to be found at all. Either way, the culprit is usually one Windows setting that keeps overriding your choice. Here is the 30-second fix first, then deeper fixes for stubborn cases.
The 30-second fix
- Press Win + I to open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners. On Windows 10 the path is Settings, then Devices, then Printers & scanners.
- Scroll to Printer preferences and turn OFF “Let Windows manage my default printer.” On Windows 10 this is a checkbox with the same name.
- Select your printer from the list and click Set as default.
- Look for the word “Default” under the printer’s name. That label means your choice is locked in.
Do these steps in exactly this order. If you set the default first and turn the toggle off later, Windows can still reassign it the next time you print.

Why Windows keeps changing your default printer
When “Let Windows manage my default printer” is on, Windows makes your most recently used printer the default. So every time you print to a different device, the default silently moves. Your manual choice is only a suggestion until the toggle is off. On a work PC, an administrator policy can also force Windows to manage the default, which hides the Set as default button entirely.
Still not working? Deep fixes
If the toggle is off and the default still will not stick, work through these in order.
Fix 1: Restart the Print Spooler and clear stuck jobs
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler in the list, right-click it, and choose Stop.
- Open C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete everything inside that folder (not the folder itself).
- Back in Services, right-click Print Spooler and choose Start.
- Set your default printer again.
Fix 2: Remove duplicate and virtual printer entries
Duplicate entries like “Printer” and “Printer (Copy 1)” confuse Windows about which device is which. Virtual printers such as Microsoft Print to PDF or fax devices can also grab the default. On the Printers & scanners page, select each extra entry, click Remove, and confirm. Then set your real printer as the default.
Fix 3: Reinstall the printer driver
- On the Printers & scanners page, select the printer and click Remove.
- Download the latest driver from the printer maker’s website. Use the current 2026 driver for your exact model, not an old CD or a generic driver.
- Install the driver, add the printer again, and set it as default.
Fix 4: Set the registry value on stubborn cases
If nothing else holds, you can force the classic default-printer behavior through the registry. Back up your registry first, then:
- Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
- Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows.
- Change LegacyDefaultPrinterMode from 0 to 1.
- Restart your PC and set the default printer again.
Fix 5: On a work PC, the policy may be locked
On company PCs, administrators can enable the “Turn off Windows default printer management” policy under User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Control Panel, Printers. If that policy is set to force Windows to manage the default, no setting on your side will stick. Contact your IT team instead of editing policy yourself. Microsoft documents the official steps in its guide to setting a default printer in Windows.

Our take
Start with the toggle. That one setting fixes the problem for most people, because Windows 11 ships with it turned on and it silently overrides manual choices. Only move to the spooler and driver fixes if the default refuses to stay put after the toggle is off. And if printing itself is broken rather than just the default, see our guide to fixing the RPC server unavailable error, which often sits behind printer failures, or resetting a COM port in Windows for device-level port trouble.
